Train to Perry Barr: Fast but Long Walk

Perry Barr station is served by trains from Birmingham New Street (8 minutes), Walsall, Wolverhampton, and Rugeley. Additional services are planned during the Championships. The station has step-free access and passenger assistance meeting points.

The walk from Perry Barr station to Alexander Stadium is 20 to 25 minutes. That is the official estimate. With crowds, barriers, and security queues, allow 30 minutes from stepping off the train to reaching your seat.

After an evening session ending at 10pm, the walk back to Perry Barr station is 20 to 25 minutes in the dark with thousands of other people. The station will be packed. Check the last train to your destination BEFORE the session. If the last train to London Euston leaves New Street at 21:50, you need to leave the stadium during the final event to make it. That is the reality.

Perry Barr station does NOT have a taxi rank. If you miss the last train, your options are the shuttle (if still running), a pre-booked taxi, or a chauffeur waiting at the designated pickup point.

M42 CLOSURE THIS FRIDAY — CRITICAL WARNING

The M42 motorway will be closed from 21:00 on Friday, 14 August, until 05:00 on Monday, 17 August. Both directions. Junctions 5A to 7 northbound. Junctions 6 to 7 southbound. Including the M6 Junction 4 southbound link to M42 northbound.

This closure is for HS2 construction works. It affects every spectator driving from the south, from Birmingham Airport, from the NEC, from Solihull, and from the M40. This is the busiest weekend of the Championships (Saturday race walks, Sunday marathon and closing ceremony).

Alternative routes: M6 via Junction 7 (Spaghetti Junction area, expect heavy traffic). A45 Coventry Road to the city centre, then shuttle. A34 from Walsall directly to the Perry Barr area (but remember, no parking). If you are flying into Birmingham Airport on Friday evening or over the weekend, check your ground transport. The standard M42 route to the city centre will not be available.

Between Sessions: Where Do 30,000 People Go?

Morning sessions start at 10:00am and run approximately 3 hours. Evening sessions start at 7:00pm. Everyone must leave the stadium between sessions and re-enter through security for the evening.

That gap is 4 to 5 hours. Perry Barr itself has limited food and entertainment options. Here is what works.

Take the shuttle back to the city centre. Eat in Brindleyplace (canal-side restaurants, 4 minutes from the shuttle stop). Browse the Bullring. Rest at your hotel. Take the shuttle back for the evening session. Allow 2.5 hours before the evening session for shuttle travel and re-entry.

Walk to One Stop Shopping Centre on Perry Barr High Street. Basic food options. 10-minute walk from the stadium. Not exciting but functional.
