Birmingham to Stansted Airport. Every Option Compared with Real Costs

Birmingham to Stansted Airport

Stansted is the furthest London airport from Birmingham. The distance from Birmingham to Stansted Airport is 120 miles northeast through the middle of England. But it’s also the only London airport with a direct train from Birmingham. 3 hours 17 minutes, no changes, no tube, no London stations. The catch? The coach is cheaper. Driving is faster. And a chauffeur does the same 2-hour journey while you rest in the back seat.

Most people flying from Stansted live in London or the southeast. Getting there from Birmingham takes more planning. Here’s what each option actually costs, how long each really takes, and which one makes sense depending on who’s travelling.

Based on 4,000+ airport transfers over 8 years. Grand Executive Chauffeurs operates Birmingham to Stansted transfers regularly.

How Far Is Birmingham from Stansted Airport

120 miles via the M6 and A14. 2 hours 10 minutes driving on clear roads. The route runs northeast through Leicester and Cambridge, staying clear of London entirely. This is the fastest driving route and the one we use for every Stansted transfer.

The alternative via the M40, M25, and M11 through north London is longer at 130 miles and adds 20-30 minutes through the M25 orbital. We don’t recommend it unless the A14 is closed.

By direct train from Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport, 3 hours 17 minutes via Ely with no changes. By train via London, 2 hours 17 minutes, but with 3 changes. By coach or bus, 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours directly from Birmingham Coach Station in Digbeth.

“Stansted for a Ryanair flight to Malaga. Family of four from Coventry. Looked at the direct train from Birmingham New Street to Stansted. Four tickets came to £180. Then we’d need a taxi to the station plus the 3-hour journey with two children. The chauffeur was £280 to our front door. Kids watched a film in the back; we arrived at the terminal in just over 2 hours. The £100 difference bought us an hour less travel and no station transfers.” — Zara and Kamran Ali, Coventry (Family Stansted Transfer)
